Mountaineering Committee Officers

Who We Are

These volunteers and leaders make what we do possible. They donate their time, energy, and knowledge to help climbers expand their skillsets, make new friends, and get to new places. From educational clinics and gym socials to Schist-mas in July — our annual climbing festival at Rumney — these are the people behind it all. We hope to meet you at an upcoming event soon.

Climbing changed how I experience places I thought I already knew. Mountains I’d hiked for years, I was now scaling a cliff to top. That shift is what drew me in and hooked me. I know it can be intimidating, and that’s exactly why I’m here. Understanding the systems we use to manage risk is what lets you stop worrying and start climbing. Ask questions, make friends, give back, and most important– Have some fun!

Cara has been the Treasurer for the Mountaineering Committee since 2022. I started climbing in 2021 and quickly fell in love with the sport. Climbing has introduced me to wonderful friends, incredible places, and the thrill of pushing myself physically and mentally in the outdoors. I love living in New Hampshire, where we have easy access to some of the best sport climbing areas around, but I’ve also been lucky enough to travel far and wide to climb in new places. In just the past year, I’ve climbed in the sunny countryside of France and taken two trips to the towering limestone walls of El Potrero Chico in Mexico. I’m excited to keep honing my skills, pushing myself further, and sharing my love of climbing with the members of the AMC-NH Mountaineering Committee!

Trip Leader For:

Dave moved to Vermont from Colorado in 2016. At that time, he had only been hiking and climbing for a few months. Being new to these outdoor hobbies in a new area presented some challenges. Fortunately, Dave stumbled across AMC’s website (Outdoors.org) and was able to take hiking classes, like the winter hiking course, and go on volunteer led climbing trips in the White Mountains, including his first trad climbs. More importantly, the AMC helped him meet new hiking and climbing partners.
Since first participating in these AMC courses and events, Dave has been able to hike all of the 4000 foot mountains in the North East as well as rock and ice climb in more than a dozen states and half a dozen countries. When the opening for co-chair of the AMC-NH Mountaineering committee opened in October of 2022, Dave stepped up so that he could help other people experience life in the outdoors.

When I started climbing so many years ago, I was exhilarated from the thrill of climbing and the challenge of the route findings. I was fortunate to explore many climbing destinations such as climbs in Colorado, CA, Utah, Nevada and the New England area which was close to home. One of my favorite memories was climbing the South Six-Shooter peak in Utah. I love the towers in the desert, natural rock formations that have been sculpted by erosion and wind, so incredible as if carved by the hands of ancient spirits. The stunning scenery and breathtaking views, I am still cherishing the moment until this day. Reminded me of the quote “Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory.”

I have a trove of reminiscences from climbing years. What I’ve learned was the important aspects such as the effective team work, trust and the inspiration of the climbing community. After a few years hiatus due to other life commitments, I started climbing again. I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute alongside such a like-minded group of climbers, I look forward to the coming year. After all, climbing brought us together. My goal is working together to create a positive and welcoming environment for everyone to enjoy the climbing sport.

David first started rock climbing as soon as he moved to NH back in 2020. He found a love for bouldering and frequently climbs at Pawtuckaway State Park. Eager to engage more with the larger climbing community, he soon became a member with AMC NH mountaineering. He is currently finishing the process of becoming a trip leader for the committee and taking on the role of equipment coordinator.

Hannah Smith

Trip Leader For:
Gym Socials
Hannah’s climbing adventures started as a kid, helping her parent’s haul their ropes up to Chapel Ledge as soon as she was tall enough not to drag the rope-backpack. Climbing off and on ever since, making sure every place she’s lived has a climbing gym, has ensured a welcoming place to build community and connect with nature. Moving back to New England in 2020, she was able to build that community once again, this time taking it one step further. Joining AMC allowed her to give back and share her love of climbing along with encouraging others to see what they can achieve!
