Updated March 24, 2023

Make 2023 a year for adventure and fun on the water!

The AMC NH Paddlers are people who enjoy life on and off the water. Like other AMC activity committees, the paddlers are outdoor enthusiasts with an interest in paddling as well as a concern for protecting and conserving our waterways. Paddling trips for all skill levels and moods are offered nearly every weekend from early March until late October and beyond.  During the long, warm days of Spring and Summer, our Wednesday night quiet water paddles are very popular, especially for first-timers.

Click here for upcoming AMC NH Paddling Trips. This will take you to AMC’s Website and will open in a new tab.

Experienced and friendly Leaders
An experienced leader, rated according to AMC standards, leads each trip.  Many trips will have a co-leader too.

Come meet our leaders.  They would like to introduce themselves.  Take a look to see them doing what they love.

Speaking of leaders.. Do you love bringing people to some favorite paddle spots too?  Consider becoming an AMC Paddle Leader!  We’ll teach you how and even provide training and coaching. Check out the details and learn more right here!

What if I need a boat?
Did you know that we offer rentals? We have rental kayaks and canoes available for people to enjoy our trips, so if you would like to join in on any adventure, we’ll met you there, equip you, and lead you on a safe and fun water adventure! Want to see what we have available? Check out our fleet!

Our Executive Committee

Is paddling your passion? Wanna get more involved? Our paddlers committee has openings!  If you’d like to serve, please have a look and contact any chair.

Class 3 Step-Up Series - 4/20/24

This series is designed for WW paddlers who demonstrate strong Class 2 skills and are ready to tackle the challenge of Class 3 whitewater. Strong Class 2 paddlers:

(1) are competent swimmers with strong self-rescue skills

(2) understand boat control and paddle strokes

(3) rarely to never swim on Class 2+ whitewater

Experienced Class 3 and Class 4 paddlers are encouraged to register as well to patiently serve as safety boaters and coaches for less experienced paddlers.

Each Saturday through March and April will bring exposure to paddling on progressively harder sections of Class 3 throughout NH. For the best learning experience, participate in all 8 sessions planned for the spring thaw. Read the following document for more details and contact Frank if you have questions.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Qp6XCyJ-L_7hg8uBtxoulG7_3m17-geEHolLJ0VjeX8

All participants should be prepared to:

(1) dedicate the ENTIRE SATURDAY to paddling

(2) plan to drive long distances to find good water

(3) scout rapids from the shore and get in and out of boats frequently.

(4) be flexible with start times and end times depending on flow and air temps

(5) manage personal COLD-WATER GEAR to be comfortable and safe on the water

In general, trips will happen if air temps are above 40F and water is fluid. This sometimes means going to a park and play site to practice skills, though we prefer to run full sections and get to a variety of sites.

Intro to Whitewater Kayaking

Have you ever wondered what it's like to paddle a kayak on a turbulent river? This is your chance to "test the waters" in a supported environment with experienced volunteer coaches.

Day 1: TBD: Flatwater and easy Class 1 and 2 rapids

We'll start the morning on dry land where you'll get fitted in a kayak, stretch, and practice the moves needed to successfully get out of your kayak should you flip.

• Anyone who has not executed a wet exit prior to this session will have to demonstrate proficiency before being allowed to proceed. We will make every effort to get you this training and demonstration beforehand.

We'll then launch on flat water to introduce the basic paddle strokes and edging skills needed to direct your kayak around obstacles. Topics will include:

• sweep strokes and draw strokes (to steer your boat)

• forward and backward strokes (to propel your kayak where you want it to go)

• leaning and edging (to help your boat turn and keep it stable in current)

In the afternoon, we'll move into gentle currents to learn:

• reading whitewater (figuring out where you want to go)

• basic whitewater safety (getting yourself and your gear to shore in the event of a swim)

• ferrying (crossing a current without getting pulled downstream)

• eddy peel out (getting into the current without flipping)

• eddy entry (getting out of the current without flipping)

• wave surfing

At the end of the day, everyone will have the option to run a short Class 2 rapid.

Day 2: Location TBD: run a Class 2 river, practicing and solidifying all the skills you learned on Day 1.

Safety is our top priority: all participants must wear a PFD (life vest) and a helmet when on or near the water. Whitewater paddling often includes swimming in swift currents and cold, turbulent water, around rocks and other obstacles; strong swimming ability is a prerequisite for this class. On Day 2, all learners will be encouraged to swim in a Class 2 rapid.

If you do not have a boat we will provide one that fits you. Boat rental is included in the course fee. No discounts or refunds if you have your own boats or drop out after the course begins.

We will work with you to ensure you have the proper clothing, footwear, sprayskirt, helmet, and PFD needed for comfort and safety.

Participant numbers are limited. If the class is full, please sign up for the waitlist.

The Winnipesaukee River will have guaranteed water during daylight hours starting at 11:00 on Friday, June 14, through Sunday June 16 for the annual Winni River Days event. Camping will be available Friday and Saturday nights. This event helps support the new Whitewater Play Park in downtown Franklin

Let's kick off the weekend with a Friday afternoon run on the Upper Winni (Class 2). This is a short run that gradually builds from Quickwater to Class II, making it perfect for newer whitewater paddlers. More experienced paddlers can practice some Class 3 moves (with Class 2 consequences if you miss), making this an ideal warmup for the weekend.

You will need a whitewater-capable kayak or canoe with flotation. Kayaks will need a sprayskirt. Helmets and PFDs must be worn at all times when on the river. Rental boats (with paddle, float bags, helmet and PFD) are available from AMC NH, see link below.

Introduction to Sea Kayaking for Whitewater Paddlers

If you are already a whitewater paddler, you have a head start in sea kayaking. The sea is always available, even when the rivers are not flowing, and you can choose the intensity of your adventure, from the equivalent of class II- to Class IV+ whitewater.

This introduction to sea kayaking assumes you have Class II whitewater skills, including forward and reverse strokes, basic bracing, and wet exits. You do not need a reliable roll.

Required equipment: If you own a sea kayak, do bring it. We will attempt to provide sea kayaks for all participants who need one. A sea kayak must be at least 14.5 ft with bulkheads and full deck lines (needed for flotation and rescues).

Dress for immersion in water temperatures around 60° Neoprene will suffice. We are going to practice rescues, so you are going to spend time in the water.

Bring your own PFD, spray skirt with a large deck, neoprene booties or snag-free water shoes, helmet, and your whitewater paddle. Also bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses with strap, lunch, and drybag for anything you want to keep dry, and perhaps a jacket to throw over your gear.

The day will begin with on-land training, then loading and fitting your sea kayaks. We will launch in a protected area and break up into small groups to practice

(1) Quick review of paddling posture, torso rotation, forward and reverse strokes, edging, and braces.

(2) Boat handling and turning a sea kayak using edging and turning strokes.

(3) Basic sea kayaking rescues: You will learn how to do an assisted re-entry to get back into your boat. You will also learn how to do a self rescue, in which you get back in your boat unassisted.

(4) Paddling in wind and waves and the use of a skeg or rudder, which changes the behavior of the kayak in wind.

After a break, we will formulate a trip plan, taking into consideration expected weather, sea state, tides and currents, boat traffic, available time, and the skill level of the group. If conditions permit, we will paddle into coastal waters. If conditions are too severe (high waves and wind) we will paddle into more protected waters. In either case, we will cover basic navigation skills on open water.

The expected venue is in Portsmouth, NH. This area allows access to the both open ocean and the protected backwaters of the Piscataqua river. There may be a parking fee.

Bad weather date is August 4.

Class 3 Dead River (Maine) Sat, Aug 10 - 2400 cfs

The Dead is one of the longest continuous sections of whitewater in the Northeast. With approximately thirty rapids along a fourteen mile stretch it is an incredibly popular summer whitewater run. The shoreline and river bed are totally different from the neighboring Kennebec river. There are few shear wall cliffs on this river. but instead it is rather flat with thick vegetation right up to the rivers edge. This can make it very difficult to rescue swimmers and equipment.

The river is primarily release controlled, although it also runs after periods of heavy rain. The difficulty of the river changes greatly depending upon release level. At lower levels (1200-1800) it is primarily class II (except for the very first, and last couple of rapids). At medium levels (2000-3500) it is class III; and at higher levels (4500-8000) class IV, premier for rafting. See this 7-minute video of paddling at 1300 cfs to get a feel for the river experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYftMkDccmk&ab

The river is mostly boulder type rapids with lots of holes and pour overs. There is simply too many features and rapids to be completely described. See https://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/view/river-detail/787/main for details. Only the highlights have been documented, including the last major rapid, Upper and Lower Poplar, which ramps up to Class 3+ and can be a trial for exhausted paddlers at the end of a long day. The good news is that Webbs campground is on the riverside take-out. You can literally drag your boat to your tent and collapse!

ADVANCED REGISTRATION REQUIRED to secure a tent site at Webbs Campground Fri and Sat nights and limited to the first 10 paddlers. Cost is $50 for two nights (required). Extended stays and independent camping arrangements are optional for all participants. More information regarding trip details and carpool arrangements will be shared as the date approaches.

Class 3 Seboomook (Maine) Sat, Aug 31 - 1500 cfs

Let's talk serious whitewater fun for Labor Day Weekend! Test your skills at paddling the West Branch of the Penobscot's Roll Dam section (Seboomook). It's a few miles of beautiful ledge/pool drops more fun than a barrel of monkeys! If you swim, no worries, just pickup your pieces in the pool after each drop and climb back in your boat for the next one. Play on a wave if so inclined. Good clean water, easy to scout and portage as needed, and the beauty of the North Maine Woods. Wicked pissah fun in mid-August when NH rivers are typically dry.

The Seboomook section of the Penobscot lies in the heart of the North Maine Woods, a consortium of private landowners (mostly paper companies), encompassing 3.5 million acres of working forest. It is a rugged and remote place many miles from the conveniences of modern day life, which sinks in as you travel the 37-mile well-kept gravel road to get there. Cold nights, warm water, campfires, and lasting friendships!

See https://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/view/river-detail/868/main for more details and this 9-minute video guide to the river: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71toFF8s8J8&ab

Androscoggin River Class 2 Two-fer

Come warm-up for Labor Day Weekend! We'll begin Friday morning with an easy Class 2 run from Mollidgewock State Park to the Androscoggin wayside. This a nice mix of flatwater/quickwater/Class 1, with a couple of Class 2 rapids for added excitement.

After lunch we will move to Errol Rapids a couple of shorter but more challenging runs.

This is a great whitewater warmup paddle for those attending our Paddlers Gathering at Clear Stream Campground in Errol. We will be offering flatwater, and Class 2 and Class 3 whitewater runs on Saturday, Sunday and Monday of Labor Day weekend

Paddlers will need a whitewater-capable canoe or kayak with flotation and the skills to maneuver confidently in swift-flowing current around rocks, holes, and waves high enough to wash over most kayaks. Kayaks and C-1s must have a tight-fitting sprayskirt or your boat will swamp. All paddlers will need a helmet and PFD.

Rentals are available through NH AMC https://sites.google.com/view/nhamcpaddlers/kayak-rentals/whitewater-kayaks but arrangements for rental and pickup/return must be made well in advance.

Flatwater/Quickwater Paddle, Magalloway or Androscoggin River

The plan is to do a long stretch of flat and quickwater either on the Magalloway River from Wilson's Mills in Maine to the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge just west of Umbagog Lake, or on the nearby Androscoggin River. In either case, there are several places along the way, where we can spot cars for those wanting a shorter trip.

This trip is suitable for canoes and recreational, crossover, and touring kayaks. Rental boats are available from the AMC NH Paddlers but arrangements for pickup and return must be made well in advance. https://sites.google.com/view/nhamcpaddlers/home.

Helmets are not required for this trip. PFDs (life vests) must be worn at all times while on the water. We strongly recommend bringing food, plenty of water, and appropriate sun and insect protection.

This trip is part of our annual Labor Day Paddlers Gathering in Errol, NH. We have group camping at Clear Stream Campground available for $15/pp/pn, 2 nights minimum.. If you are interested in camping, please register here: https://activities.outdoors.org/search/index.cfm/action/details/id/146283&act=13

Swiftwater Rescue Skills Practice For Leaders and Leaders In Training

This two-day session will focus on the skills that every Class 2-3 whitewater trip leader should practice to proficiency. We will be creating realistic scenarios and practicing basic techniques for the swiftwater rescues commonly encountered on Class 2 and Class 3 runs.

Topics may include:

• Safety check before setting out

• Incident scene management

• Swimming in whitewater

• Self rescue

• Boat rescue of swimmers

• Floating boat recovery

• Floating equipment recovery

• Throw rope rescues (both pre-positioned and on-the-fly)

• Debriefing

No one will be standing around watching; you will be expected to actively participate as both victim and rescuer. Please come prepared to spend a good part of the day IN the water. You will be intentionally capsizing and exiting your boat and swimming in rocky rapids.

Requirements include a whitewater-capable boat with sprayskirt and flotation. You'll also need a PFD, helmet, and whistle. Helmet and PFD must be worn and secured at all times while on or near the water. Be sure your footwear has sturdy soles that will grip on wet rocks, closed-toes (rocks are sharp and there's often broken glass around), and will stay on your feet when you swim.

Bring a throw bag (everyone should have one) and any other rescue equipment you normally carry (tow tether, carabiners, pin kit, etc.). If you own or have access to a rescue PFD with a quick-release belt, please bring that. We will have some extras to lend.

You may also want gloves, noseplugs and insect protection. Lunch will be along the river; bring adequate food and water for all day.

Notes: The location given is tentative; we will go where water conditions are best. Please register even if the trip is waitlisted.

Quiet Camping For West Fest Paddlers

West Fest is an annual celebration of whitewater paddling coinciding with a release on the West River in Jamaica, VT. Jamaica State Park is the epicenter for this event, and campsite there are long sold out.

For those more interested in paddling (and a good night's sleep) than partying the night away, the Jamaica Elementary School (5 min walk from the State Park) is opening its field to registered AMC Campers for a non-party gathering and Saturday night potluck. We will be able to use the school's restrooms (no showers) and kitchen for the potluck.

The school is traditionally the put-in for the Class 2 run to Route 100, and one of the takeouts for the Class 3 run from Ball Mountain Dam. We will be posting volunteer-led trips on both the Class 3 and Class 2 sections of the West.

Camping is Friday and Saturday night. Fee is $10per person/per night, payable in cash at the campsite. All proceeds will be donated directly to the school. Because camping is on school grounds, alcohol, tobacco and all drugs (including legal marijuana) are strictly prohibited. Anyone breaking this rule will be asked to leave immediately.

We hope to be able to offer this option yearly, but will only be able to do so if everyone cooperates.

AMC Paddlers Potlucks are legendary. All we ask is that you bring something you like to eat and enough to share.
