AMC Plans 1,500 Mile Torch Relay to Celebrate 150 years of Outdoor Leadership
In celebration of 150 years, the Appalachian Mountain Club will host a historic 1,500-mile torch relay from Virginia to Maine, beginning in March and ending in October 2026. This epic journey will unite hikers, paddlers, cyclists, and outdoor enthusiasts to carry a ceremonial torch across cherished trails, breathtaking landscapes, and beloved AMC lodges and camps. Along the way, vibrant events in cities like New York and Boston and celebratory gatherings at key AMC locations will bring our mission to life. Together, we’ll celebrate our shared love for nature, our commitment to conservation, and the spirit of adventure that connects us all. AMCNH activity leader participation needed!
Responsible Hiking Practices During Mud Season – By Diana Moore
The mountains of New Hampshire attract hikers from all over the world all year around. Trails of all sorts offer a unique, if often messy, experience during the transitional period between winter and spring known affectionally as, “mud season.” This period, typically spanning early to late April to late May or even early June, presents hikers with a challenging landscape as the winter snowpack melts combined with spring rain to create a mixed bag of adventure for those willing to embrace the slop.

AMC 150 HISTORY SERIES: Chapter 2 – Conservation; Chapter 1 – The Beginning – by Becky Fullerton, AMC Archivist
The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding in 2026. Leading up to this auspicious milestone, we’ll be sharing historical highlights about the founding and development of the club. Though not a comprehensive history of AMC, this series is meant to help us connect to our heritage as the country’s oldest conservation and outdoor recreation nonprofit and to better understand our own place in this special community that has been helping people know and love the outdoors since 1876.
ALL OUT: AMC ACTION PLAN 2025-2030
Since 1876, the Appalachian Mountain Club has been a leading voice for conservation while connecting people to the joy of the outdoors. We’ve led the charge on landmark legislation like the Weeks Act in 1911 and the Highland Conservation Act in 2004. We’ve served as hands-on stewards of nearly 2,000 miles of trails and protected more than 114,000 acres of the iconic 100-Mile Wilderness through our Maine Woods Initiative. Our community of 90,000 members from Maine to Virginia make use of our vast recreational network of outdoor program centers, lodges, huts, and camps—but our aspirations are even bigger.
