Mountain Passages

Mountain Passages is the AMC New Hampshire Chapter’s online journal of outdoor adventures and “how-to” articles for hiking skiing, paddling and other outdoor activities. Mountain Passages also posts in-depth articles related to Chapter activities, history of the White Mountains, outdoor skills, conservation, woods lore and many other topics. The New Hampshire Chapter has published Mountain Passages for 50 years. You can find its latest posts and information and a digital archive of older printed editions at www.amcnh.org/newsletter/. Mountain Passages also serves as a platform for members interested in publishing on topics relevant to the AMC New Hampshire community.

The Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) will celebrate the 150th anniversary of its founding in 2026. Leading up to this auspicious milestone, we’ll be sharing historical highlights about the founding and development of the club. Everything from trails to trips, conservation to canoeing, lodges to lean-tos, with surprising stories and little-known facts in between. Though not a comprehensive history of AMC, this series is meant to help us connect to our heritage as the country’s oldest conservation and outdoor recreation nonprofit and to better understand our own place in this special community that has been helping people know and love the outdoors since 1876.

Our renowned weekend workshops, covering most every aspect of safe three-season backcountry travel, are designed for hikers of all levels!  You will work with our very experienced volunteer instructors in small experiential learning groups. All instructors are active trip leaders with NH Chapter AMC.  Groups are 6 – 8 participants to 2 instructors so learning is experiential, fun, and focused for you.

Be Part of the COMMUNITY SNOW OBSERVATIONS PROJECT – by Sarah Sallade

While we have many weather stations that can measure precipitation data including snow, these stations are at fixed points in the landscape. The CSO project instead asks snow “users” including snowmobilers, backcountry skiers, snowshoers, and winter hikers to measure snow depth while they are out recreating.
