Wednesday Night Hike: Bear Brook State Park - Catamount & Cascade

Join us for a series of hikes on Wednesday evenings. These are great opportunities for anyone looking to get outside on a weeknight, meet other local AMC members and stay fresh for bigger weekend adventures. Hikes are typically under five miles, at a relaxed pace and include a mid-hike dinner break.

The series will kick off with this hike to Bear Brook State Park, located in Allenstown, NH, conveniently located between Manchester and Concord. We'll be hiking a four-mile loop to the top of Catamount Hill and along the Cascade Path. The hike will include about 650 feet of elevation gain. Catamount Hill features a great view of the Merrimack Vally, while the Cascade Path runs along a very scenic brook.

These hikes will occur nearly every week starting in April and run through the summer months. All hikes will be listed on www.outdoors.org about a month in advance, so please check the site regularly as the season goes on. The locations will be throughout the state, with nearly every region hosting at least one. Please register for each hike with its respective leader.

Upper Winni Class II

Run the river backwards! Turning upstream to catch every surf and every eddy down the river gives you extra paddling practice and a sweet skills tune-up with low consequences on Class II whitewater on the Upper Winni. Plus it's ridiculously fun!

The Winnipesaukee River provides a combination of both flat water paddling and class I-II rapids.

We will need to shuttle several miles and can arrange this on the morning of our paddle at the put-in.

Paddlers should have prior whitewater kayaking or canoe experience and equipment that is in good condition. The water will be VERY cold meaning that swims and rescues are riskier.

Gear to bring:

White water kayak or canoe, with flotation bags

Paddle

Spray skirt

Helmet

PFD

Dry suit or full wet suit with a dry top - the water will be cold!

Cold water paddle gloves

Water/snacks

Towel and dry clothes/layers for post-paddle

Interested paddlers should register for the trip and will then be contacted by the trip leader to make sure the trip is a good fit for you.

Additional details including meeting time and location will be provided once a paddler is approved to join the trip.

Class 2 Leader's Choice

Weather and water permitting, let's do a quick, fun, morning run on some easy Class 2 before we all head to the AMC NH Paddlers Spring Meeting and Potluck in Concord: https://activities.outdoors.org/search/index.cfm/action/details/id/149204&act=13

Options will be close to Concord, and might include Upper Winni, Sewalls Falls on the Merrimack, or the Class 2 Contoocook in Henniker. These rivers are good for paddlers just getting comfortable on Class 2, but also offer some step-up potential for those looking to advance their skills

This trip requires whitewater paddling experience and a whitewater-capable canoe or kayak with flotation, or a whitewater-rated inflatable. PFDs and helmets must be worn at all times when on or near the water. Kayaks must have a tight-fitting spray skirt. If you don't have your own boat and gear, rentals are available at https://sites.google.com/view/nhamcpaddlers/home. Arrangements for rental and pickup must be made well in advance.

Register if you are interested in paddling. We'll send around a situation assessment on Saturday evening and make a final decision on where we are going before 6AM on Sunday.

Patriots Day Parade Paddle

Don your tri-corner hat and join me on Patriots Day morning for a short paddle down the Concord River and under the historic Old North Bridge. We'll drop anchor at 8:20am to enjoy re-enactment ceremonies and a commemoration of the battle for the bridge before being treated to the parade arrival at approximately 9am

Note - this will be an extended period of sitting in place. Those looking to actually paddle the river instead of watching the events will have the option to organize a subgroup to get some mileage. I know - it's been a long winter and I am itching to paddle hard too. :) After the parade, we will definitely venture up either Sudbury or the Assabet river a little for those who want to do some river exploring.

Details about the full Patriots Day weekend are here:

https://www.nps.gov/mima/planyourvisit/patriots-day.htm

Paddle details - Could be cold water conditions. Dress appropriately! We may be stationary for some time while re-enactments and speeches are in progress. If you have a kayak anchor, this is one of those rare trips to use one.

As of now, this is a level-1 paddle open to all paddlers/sit-in kayaks/canoes. As the paddle date comes closer, winter runoff and conditions on the Concord River may change. Flooding and fast current may elevate this to a level-2.

Butts in boats NLT 08:00:am to be at the Old North Bridge by 08:30 for the start of re-enactments.

Parking will not be allowed on the Lowell Road Boat Ramp, bridge, or parade route. All vehicles will need to be parked along Lowell Road north of Liberty Street. (A couple hundred feet walk - no biggie)

Each Saturday through March and April will bring exposure to paddling on progressively harder sections of Class 3 throughout NH. For the best learning experience, participate in all 8 sessions planned for the spring thaw. Read the following document for more details and contact Frank if you have questions.

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1Qp6XCyJ-L_7hg8uBtxoulG7_3m17-geEHolLJ0VjeX8

All participants should be prepared to:

(1) dedicate the ENTIRE SATURDAY to paddling

(2) plan to drive long distances to find good water

(3) scout rapids from the shore and get in and out of boats frequently.

(4) be flexible with start times and end times depending on flow and air temps

(5) manage personal COLD-WATER GEAR to be comfortable and safe on the water

In general, trips will happen if air temps are above 40F and water is fluid. This sometimes means going to a park and play site to practice skills, though we prefer to run full sections and get to a variety of sites.

Do you know what to do if you or one of your paddling friends gets hurt? Do you know how to use an EpiPen and what to do until you can get emergency care for a paddler having an allergic reaction? An asthma attack? A seizure? If one of your paddling friends dislocates a shoulder far from an emergency room, what would you do?

If you are concerned that you wouldn't be prepared in the case of these or other emergencies, join us for Paddlers First Aid. This is a modified Wilderness First Aid course designed specifically for paddlers; whether you enjoy whitewater paddling, sea kayaking, or rafting, this course is designed to give you the skills to treat an injured or ill person on the water and get that person and the rest of your group to help safely.

Intro to Whitewater Kayaking

Have you ever wondered what it's like to paddle a kayak on a turbulent river? This is your chance to "test the waters" in a supported environment with experienced volunteer coaches.

Day 1: TBD: Flatwater and easy Class 1 and 2 rapids

We'll start the morning on dry land where you'll get fitted in a kayak, stretch, and practice the moves needed to successfully get out of your kayak should you flip.

• Anyone who has not executed a wet exit prior to this session will have to demonstrate proficiency before being allowed to proceed. We will make every effort to get you this training and demonstration beforehand.

20s & 30s New England Trail Challenge: Hike 1

Join us to complete the New England Trail (NET) Hike Challenge!

There're so many lists and patches you can get from hiking in New England, but we bet you haven't heard of this one; the challenge requires you to hike 50 or 100 miles of the New England Trail (either the same section or different sections) by December 31, 2024. Once you complete this requirement, you can submit your successful completion of the challenge photos on line through the NET website.

We are hosting this hike as the 1st of many to get to a total of 100 miles this summer, so if you are interested in joining the challenge, you can sign up (it's FREE) using the links below through NET and register for any of our hikes that say "New England Trail Challenge" throughout the year. You don't have to go through these big objectives alone!

Hike 1 will start with MA Section 17 in Northern Massachusetts. With 1700 feet of elevation gain and ~11 miles this point to point hike is a good way to start the challenge.

Intro to Whitewater Kayaking

Have you ever wondered what's it's like to paddle a kayak on a turbulent river? This is your chance to "test the waters" in a supported environment with experienced volunteer coaches.

Day 1: Flatwater and easy Class 1 and 2 rapids

We'll start the morning on dry land where you'll get fitted in a kayak, stretch, and practice the moves needed to successfully get out of your kayak should you flip.

• Anyone who has not executed a wet exit prior to this session will have to demonstrate proficiency before being allowed to proceed. We will make every effort to get you this training and demonstration beforehand.

We'll then launch on flat water to introduce the basic paddle strokes and edging skills needed to direct your kayak around obstacles. Topics will include:

• sweep strokes and draw strokes (to steer your boat)

• forward and backward strokes (to propel your kayak where you want it to go)

• leaning and edging (to help your boat turn and keep it stable in current)

In the afternoon, we'll move into gentle currents to learn:

• reading whitewater (figuring out where you want to go)

• basic whitewater safety (getting yourself and your gear to shore in the event of a swim)

• ferrying (crossing a current without getting pulled downstream)

• eddy peel out (getting into the current without flipping)

• eddy entry (getting out of the current without flipping)

• wave surfing

At the end of the day, everyone will have the option to run a short Class 2 rapid.

Day 2: Location to be determined: run a Class 2 river, practicing and solidifying all the skills you learned on Day 1.

Safety is our top priority: all participants must wear a PFD (life vest) and a helmet when on or near the water. Whitewater paddling often includes swimming in swift currents and cold, turbulent water, around rocks and other obstacles; strong swimming ability is a prerequisite for this class. On Day 2, all learners will be encouraged to swim in a Class 2 rapid.

If you do not have a boat we will provide one that fits you. Boat rental is included in the course fee. No discounts or refunds if you have your own boat or drop out after the course begins.

We will work with you to ensure you have the proper clothing, footwear, sprayskirt, helmet, and PFD needed for comfort and safety.

2 hike days + car camp at Cold River Campground, 52 WAV Mt Eastman + Deer Hill area

Join us for a 52 With-A-View hike of Mt. Eastman, an overnight car camping experience and a hike in the Deer Hill area of eastern Maine.

Did you backpack years ago and no longer want to carry a heavy pack? Are you curious about camping out overnight but don't want to do it alone? Or do you simply want to indulge in your love for hiking and camping with peers?

We will meet on Sunday morning June 2 to hike Mt Eastman via the Slippery Brook Trail at a moderate pace. This is a round-trip distance of about 8.5 miles, with about 2,580' elevation. We will offer the option of a ridge walk along Baldface Knob Trail (this would add a total of 1.4 miles). The ascent is mostly gradual, with a steeper section in the last .5 mile leading to the summit. At the summit, we'll enjoy lunch and views of the Moat and Sandwich Ranges, as well as of South Baldface, and eastward, Maine, weather permitting.

After descending back to the trailhead, we will drive a few minutes north to set up camp at our designated campsite at Cold River Campground (or a nearby similar campground). Participants will bring their own small tent, sleeping bag, backpacking stove and food. If you do not have a tent or a stove, but want to camp, please contact one of the leaders to discuss how we may accommodate you. We will cook supper and gather round to share camp stories, and ideas for future excursions.

On Monday morning, we will enjoy a coffee, tea and breakfast before packing up and checking out of the campsite. We will drive a few miles south to the Deer Hill Connector trailhead parking. From here, we will enjoy a leisurely hike of approximately 4 miles and 1,000' elevation (round trip) to the summit of Deer Hill. We expect to be back at our cars to head home by midday on Monday.

Payment: $21 includes one night campground fee. ($25 non-AMC)

Participants bring their own food.

Cancellation and refund policy:

If you must cancel before May 19, you will be refunded in full only if we can fill your spot. Cancellations made after midnight May 30 are not refundable. In the event that the trip is cancelled due to weather or other unforeseen circumstances, you will be refunded less a $10 cancellation fee required by the campground.

After filling out the online Registration, you will be contacted by the leaders to complete the registration process and payment.

Zealand Hut Overnight: Z-Bonds Traverse

After an early morning car spot at Lincoln Woods, we'll head over to the Highland Center/Crawford Notch to start our hike. We'll hike to the Zealand Hut by way of the Avalon and A-Z trails, stopping to summit Mt Tom on the way. After 5.5 miles and 2400 feet of elevation gain, we should have time once we get to the hut to take off our boots and soak in the falls as we wait for dinner.

The next morning, after our croo provided breakfast, we'll head out to tackle Zealand, West Bond, Bond and Bondcliff for 7.2 miles/3700 ft of elevation gain with some of the most amazing views of the Pemi Wilderness. From the summit of Bondcliff, we'll descend the Bondcliff Trail to the Lincoln Trail adding another 8.8 miles to our trip until we get to our cars that we spotted the day before.

The hut is carry in/carry out and sleeping arrangements are in co-ed bunkrooms. You'll be responsible for lunches. We're looking for people that enjoy hiking with a group, following group rules and only hiking as fast as the slowest hiker. Our pace will average around 1.5 miles an hour.

This is a strenuous hike based on distance, terrain and elevation gain. Previous 4K or similar elevation gain and distance hiking will be required to participate in this hike.

Once participants have discussed this hike with leaders and are approved for the hike, instructions will be provided for hut reservations.

20s & 30s Friday Night Hike: Monadnock

Mount Monadnock is one of the most challenging mountains in southern NH, so why not do it at night? Avoiding the crowds and taking a trail that isn't super popular makes this hike so much more fun and rewarding, plus if we're lucky views of the stars and maybe a sunset before the longest day of the year?!

This hike will be 4.4 miles round trip and 1600 feet of elevation gain. This is a moderate-difficult hike and will be done at around a 2.0-2.5 mph pace however we do set our pace to that of the slowest hiker. Headlamps will be required!

20s & 30s New England Trail Challenge: Hike 2

Hike 2 of the New England Challenge and it's going to be a big day!

We're going to tackle the whole Mount Holyoke Range by hiking MA Sections 7, 8 and 9 of the NET for a total of 13.2 miles point to point and a little under 4100 feet of elevation gain for the day. This hike will require car spotting.

This is Hike 2 in our New England Trail Challenge hiking series:

There're so many lists and patches you can get from hiking in New England, but we bet you haven't heard of this one; the challenge requires you to hike 50 or 100 miles of the New England Trail (either the same section or different sections) by December 31, 2024. Once you complete this requirement, you can submit your successful completion of the challenge photos on line through the NET website.

We are hosting this hike to get to a total of 100 miles this summer, so if you are interested in joining the challenge, you can sign up (it's FREE) using the links below through NET and register for any of our hikes that say "New England Trail Challenge" throughout the year. You don't have to go through these big objectives alone!

Hike 3 of the 52 WAVs + 2-night stay at Joe Dodge Lodge

Come join us for an early summer weekend adventure in Pinkham Notch: we will hike 3 of the "52-With-A-View" mountains, and enjoy 2 nights at Joe Dodge Lodge (including 2 breakfasts and 2 dinners). All of our hikes will be at a moderate pace, with short breaks and a longer pause for lunch.

Our trip begins on Friday morning. We will meet around 9:00 a.m to hike Mt Hayes (6.6 mi, 2050' elevation). After our hike, we will drive to Joe Dodge Lodge and check in, with some free time before we assemble for dinner together in the dining hall. In the evening, we can enjoy reading, talking together, board games or star gazing (weather permitting).

On Saturday, after breakfast, we will drive a few miles north to hike the Imp Face loop, about 6.0 miles and 2070' elevation. The Imp Face gets its impish name from the shape of the rock outcrop in the middle of the loop. The cliff on the side of North Carter Mountain offers breathtaking views of Pinkham Notch, Mt Washington and the Northern Presidentials.

Returning to Joe Dodge Lodge after our hike, we will have some free time to explore the grounds, socialize or indulge in a nap before meeting in the dining hall for supper.

On Sunday morning, after savoring another one of the Lodge's great breakfasts, we'll pack up and check out, then drive about 17 minutes to the trailhead for Pine Mt near Gorham. This 3.4 mi, 846' elevation hike offers an impressive experience for relatively little effort. At the top of the south cliffs is an example of "glacial striation," long, straight grooves cut into bedrock by rocks embedded in a glacier as it passed over the surface.

Our trip ends back at the parking lot as we say goodbyes and look forward to our next adventure.

Highlights

- Explore scenic trails on 3 "52 WAV" hikes with two knowledgeable AMC volunteer leaders

- Great breakfast and dinner meals served by wonderful AMC staff

- Free time before and after supper to make new friends, stroll the grounds, enjoy individual or group interests

After filling out the online Registration, you will be contacted by the leaders to complete the registration process and payment.

Hike the Belknaps - Part 1

This is the first of two hikes this summer where we tackle the Belknap Range

We'll start with a car spot at Mount Major and then head over to the Alton Mtn Road trail head to start our hike with the goal of summiting Mt. Anna, Mt. Mack and Mt Klem. Then we'll head back to Rand, West Quarry and Straightback before taking the Belknap Range Trail back to Mt Major where we will descend after hiking 9.6 miles to pick up our cars that we spotted that morning. The views on this hike will be spectacular, including the view of Lake Winnipesaukee in the heart of the lakes region.

This is a group hike; we'll start as a group, stay as a group and finish as a group with the slowest hiker setting our pace. Our average pace is around 1.5 mph. If you are looking for a great day of hiking with some good company, this is the hike for you!

Previous hiking experience with this distance and elevation gain of @3k feet is required.

Introduction to Sea Kayaking for Whitewater Paddlers

If you are already a whitewater paddler, you have a head start in sea kayaking. The sea is always available, even when the rivers are not flowing, and you can choose the intensity of your adventure, from the equivalent of class II- to Class IV+ whitewater.

This introduction to sea kayaking assumes you have Class II whitewater skills, including forward and reverse strokes, basic bracing, and wet exits. You do not need a reliable roll.

Required equipment: If you own a sea kayak, do bring it. We will attempt to provide sea kayaks for all participants who need one. A sea kayak must be at least 14.5 ft with bulkheads and full deck lines (needed for flotation and rescues).

Dress for immersion in water temperatures around 60° Neoprene will suffice. We are going to practice rescues, so you are going to spend time in the water.

Bring your own PFD, spray skirt with a large deck, neoprene booties or snag-free water shoes, helmet, and your whitewater paddle. Also bring water, sunscreen, sunglasses with strap, lunch, and drybag for anything you want to keep dry, and perhaps a jacket to throw over your gear.

The day will begin with on-land training, then loading and fitting your sea kayaks. We will launch in a protected area and break up into small groups to practice

(1) Quick review of paddling posture, torso rotation, forward and reverse strokes, edging, and braces.

(2) Boat handling and turning a sea kayak using edging and turning strokes.

(3) Basic sea kayaking rescues: You will learn how to do an assisted re-entry to get back into your boat. You will also learn how to do a self rescue, in which you get back in your boat unassisted.

(4) Paddling in wind and waves and the use of a skeg or rudder, which changes the behavior of the kayak in wind.

After a break, we will formulate a trip plan, taking into consideration expected weather, sea state, tides and currents, boat traffic, available time, and the skill level of the group. If conditions permit, we will paddle into coastal waters. If conditions are too severe (high waves and wind) we will paddle into more protected waters. In either case, we will cover basic navigation skills on open water.

The expected venue is in Portsmouth, NH. This area allows access to the both open ocean and the protected backwaters of the Piscataqua river. There may be a parking fee.

Bad weather date is August 4.

Class 3 Dead River (Maine) Sat, Aug 10 - 2400 cfs

The Dead is one of the longest continuous sections of whitewater in the Northeast. With approximately thirty rapids along a fourteen mile stretch it is an incredibly popular summer whitewater run. The shoreline and river bed are totally different from the neighboring Kennebec river. There are few shear wall cliffs on this river. but instead it is rather flat with thick vegetation right up to the rivers edge. This can make it very difficult to rescue swimmers and equipment.

The river is primarily release controlled, although it also runs after periods of heavy rain. The difficulty of the river changes greatly depending upon release level. At lower levels (1200-1800) it is primarily class II (except for the very first, and last couple of rapids). At medium levels (2000-3500) it is class III; and at higher levels (4500-8000) class IV, premier for rafting. See this 7-minute video of paddling at 1300 cfs to get a feel for the river experience: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BYftMkDccmk&ab

The river is mostly boulder type rapids with lots of holes and pour overs. There is simply too many features and rapids to be completely described. See https://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/view/river-detail/787/main for details. Only the highlights have been documented, including the last major rapid, Upper and Lower Poplar, which ramps up to Class 3+ and can be a trial for exhausted paddlers at the end of a long day. The good news is that Webbs campground is on the riverside take-out. You can literally drag your boat to your tent and collapse!

ADVANCED REGISTRATION REQUIRED to secure a tent site at Webbs Campground Fri and Sat nights and limited to the first 10 paddlers. Cost is $50 for two nights (required). Extended stays and independent camping arrangements are optional for all participants. More information regarding trip details and carpool arrangements will be shared as the date approaches.

Class 3 Seboomook (Maine) Sat, Aug 31 - 1500 cfs

Let's talk serious whitewater fun for Labor Day Weekend! Test your skills at paddling the West Branch of the Penobscot's Roll Dam section (Seboomook). It's a few miles of beautiful ledge/pool drops more fun than a barrel of monkeys! If you swim, no worries, just pickup your pieces in the pool after each drop and climb back in your boat for the next one. Play on a wave if so inclined. Good clean water, easy to scout and portage as needed, and the beauty of the North Maine Woods. Wicked pissah fun in mid-August when NH rivers are typically dry.

The Seboomook section of the Penobscot lies in the heart of the North Maine Woods, a consortium of private landowners (mostly paper companies), encompassing 3.5 million acres of working forest. It is a rugged and remote place many miles from the conveniences of modern day life, which sinks in as you travel the 37-mile well-kept gravel road to get there. Cold nights, warm water, campfires, and lasting friendships!

See https://www.americanwhitewater.org/content/River/view/river-detail/868/main for more details and this 9-minute video guide to the river: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=71toFF8s8J8&ab

Androscoggin River Class 2 Two-fer

Come warm-up for Labor Day Weekend! We'll begin Friday morning with an easy Class 2 run from Mollidgewock State Park to the Androscoggin wayside. This a nice mix of flatwater/quickwater/Class 1, with a couple of Class 2 rapids for added excitement.

After lunch we will move to Errol Rapids a couple of shorter but more challenging runs.

This is a great whitewater warmup paddle for those attending our Paddlers Gathering at Clear Stream Campground in Errol. We will be offering flatwater, and Class 2 and Class 3 whitewater runs on Saturday, Sunday and Monday of Labor Day weekend

Paddlers will need a whitewater-capable canoe or kayak with flotation and the skills to maneuver confidently in swift-flowing current around rocks, holes, and waves high enough to wash over most kayaks. Kayaks and C-1s must have a tight-fitting sprayskirt or your boat will swamp. All paddlers will need a helmet and PFD.

Rentals are available through NH AMC https://sites.google.com/view/nhamcpaddlers/kayak-rentals/whitewater-kayaks but arrangements for rental and pickup/return must be made well in advance.

Flatwater/Quickwater Paddle, Magalloway or Androscoggin River

The plan is to do a long stretch of flat and quickwater either on the Magalloway River from Wilson's Mills in Maine to the Umbagog National Wildlife Refuge just west of Umbagog Lake, or on the nearby Androscoggin River. In either case, there are several places along the way, where we can spot cars for those wanting a shorter trip.

This trip is suitable for canoes and recreational, crossover, and touring kayaks. Rental boats are available from the AMC NH Paddlers but arrangements for pickup and return must be made well in advance. https://sites.google.com/view/nhamcpaddlers/home.

Helmets are not required for this trip. PFDs (life vests) must be worn at all times while on the water. We strongly recommend bringing food, plenty of water, and appropriate sun and insect protection.

This trip is part of our annual Labor Day Paddlers Gathering in Errol, NH. We have group camping at Clear Stream Campground available for $15/pp/pn, 2 nights minimum.. Hike the Belknaps - Part 2

This is the second of two hikes this summer where we tackle the Belknap Range.

We'll start with a car spot at Belknap Mountain Rd at the Whiteface Mountain Trail and then head back out to the Gunstock Resort and the Ridge Trail trailhead parking. After summiting Mt Rowe, we'll take the Belknap Range Trail with the goal of hitting the summits of Gunstock, Belknap Mt, Piper Mt and then finally Whiteface Mt. We'll head back down the Whiteface Mtn trail and, after logging over 9 miles in total for the day, we pick up our cars that we spotted that morning.

The Belknap Range is a popular and exciting hike, providing us with views of the ski area and other beautiful peaks in the Belknap Mountain State Forest. This is a group hike; we'll start as a group, stay as a group and finish as a group with the slowest hiker setting our pace. Swiftwater Rescue Skills Practice For Leaders and Leaders In Training

This two-day session will focus on the skills that every Class 2-3 whitewater trip leader should practice to proficiency. We will be creating realistic scenarios and practicing basic techniques for the swiftwater rescues commonly encountered on Class 2 and Class 3 runs.

Topics may include:

• Safety check before setting out

• Incident scene management

• Swimming in whitewater

• Self rescue

• Boat rescue of swimmers

• Floating boat recovery

• Floating equipment recovery

• Throw rope rescues (both pre-positioned and on-the-fly)

• Debriefing

No one will be standing around watching; you will be expected to actively participate as both victim and rescuer. Please come prepared to spend a good part of the day IN the water. You will be intentionally capsizing and exiting your boat and swimming in rocky rapids.

Requirements include a whitewater-capable boat with sprayskirt and flotation. You'll also need a PFD, helmet, and whistle. Helmet and PFD must be worn and secured at all times while on or near the water. Be sure your footwear has sturdy soles that will grip on wet rocks, closed-toes (rocks are sharp and there's often broken glass around), and will stay on your feet when you swim.

Bring a throw bag (everyone should have one) and any other rescue equipment you normally carry (tow tether, carabiners, pin kit, etc.). If you own or have access to a rescue PFD with a quick-release belt, please bring that. We will have some extras to lend.

You may also want gloves, noseplugs and insect protection. Lunch will be along the river; bring adequate food and water for all day.

Notes: The location given is tentative; we will go where water conditions are best. Please register even if the trip is waitlisted.

Quiet Camping For West Fest Paddlers

West Fest is an annual celebration of whitewater paddling coinciding with a release on the West River in Jamaica, VT. Jamaica State Park is the epicenter for this event, and campsite there are long sold out.

For those more interested in paddling (and a good night's sleep) than partying the night away, the Jamaica Elementary School (5 min walk from the State Park) is opening its field to registered AMC Campers for a non-party gathering and Saturday night potluck. We will be able to use the school's restrooms (no showers) and kitchen for the potluck.

The school is traditionally the put-in for the Class 2 run to Route 100, and one of the takeouts for the Class 3 run from Ball Mountain Dam. We will be posting volunteer-led trips on both the Class 3 and Class 2 sections of the West.

Camping is Friday and Saturday night. Fee is $10per person/per night, payable in cash at the campsite. All proceeds will be donated directly to the school. Because camping is on school grounds, alcohol, tobacco and all drugs (including legal marijuana) are strictly prohibited. Anyone breaking this rule will be asked to leave immediately.

We hope to be able to offer this option yearly, but will only be able to do so if everyone cooperates.

AMC Paddlers Potlucks are legendary. All we ask is that you bring something you like to eat and enough to share.

Please sign the e-registration below and feel free to reach out if you have questions.

Advance Notice Fall Hiking Weekend, Over 55 Group

If you have not been to AMC's Cold River Camp in Evans Notch, you should make it a priority this fall. Mark your calendars for Sept. 20-22, 2024. Over 55 weekends are becoming a wonderful AMC tradition, as this marks the fourth annual year.

What to expect:

The camp consists of wonderful rustic cabins, sleeping anywhere from 1-6 individuals. Each cabin will have beds, blankets, and pillows, but you would need to bring either sleeping bags or sheets and towels. There is a main bathhouse with hot water and showers. In the middle of the camp site there is the main building with a large lounge area, dining room and kitchen. Over the weekend we will be served dinner and breakfast and trail lunches. There are many hiking options in the area. We will plan on volunteer leader-led hikes on Saturday and shorter hikes on Sunday (Some hikes may include 52 WAV). Some folks may want to organize their own hikes which is an option as well. Others may just want to relax and enjoy the peaceful setting, play games, and read. Saturday night we will have lively musical entertainment.

Come ready to see old friends and meet new ones. Even though the weekend is posted as age 55+, all ages > 18 are welcomed.

20s & 30s 2-Day Pemi Loop

After our super successful Pemi Loop in 2023, we're bringing it back!

Along the way we'll be tagging 9 4000 footers: All 3 bonds, S.Twin, Garfield, Lafayette, Lincoln, Liberty, Lincoln (with options to tag Galehead, Guyot and Zealand) over the course of 34 miles and ~10K feet of elevation gain.

This time we're targeting 2 days of hiking and one night of stay in AMC's Galehead Hut. This means less gear and a faster pace. Spots are very limited, and a screening call will be required upon registration.

This is a group trip, and we will start, hike, and end as a group! Expected pace will be moderate-fast, and we will set the pace to that of the slowest hiker. This is getting posted extremely early in order to get best pricing options for this hut.
